The richness of the material Jeffrey is looking at for our project with Historic England is multi-dimensional. There are the materials themselves, the dynamics of clay, earth, fibres, stone and wood which are doing so many different things, from structures to fine finishes via hybrid composite walls and framing. Then there is the elements of design for domestic, commercial and agricultural use, the robustness of the detailing for the varied needs of the buildings. And then there is time, how these buildings have been used, maintained, repaired, altered, retrofitted, upgraded across centuries.
