Eden Project Rammed Earth wall with Rowland's parents

“Julian Keable FRIBA (1929-2022) After travel to Morocco, Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan and inspired by the work of Clough williams Ellis and Hassan Fathy, Julian started designing rammed earth structures for projects in Tanzania and Ghana the 1970's. His enthusiasm and engagement continued into the '80's and '90's culminating in the research, writing and publication of Rammed Earth Structures: a Code of Practice in 1996, now the basis of an African Regional Standard.

His vision and enthusiasm inspired many people, gave them the opportunity to work with material and technology largely ignored or forgotten until its more recent interest and renaissance. He pursued a wide range of other design and technology routes including passive solar design, solar conversion of water to hydrogen after early forays into wind turbines and heat pumps in the early 1970's. He looked both backwards and forwards while remaining stubbornly in the present.”

The late Julian Keable was a Patron of EBUKI and an inspiration!
