Skills and Education

To foster the traditional skills base and promote the development of new skills and techniques. To promote earth building during the education and training of construction professionals.


How we are working towards this aim:

  • JUMP! project - Training for Trainers

  • Tudor Trust Marginal Groups project

  • Supporting the Erasmus Mobility Scheme - individuals to carry out accredited training courses abroad

  • Creating NVQ courses to bring about accredited standards

  • Developing accredited training standards and Earth Building standards with national and international partners

Conservation

To promote the recognition, understanding and cultural significance of existing earth buildings in the UK and Ireland. To promote the appropriate repair and maintenance of earth buildings.


How we are working towards this aim:

  • Our Way Heritage Lives project – European funded

  • Links with the Society for Protection of Ancient Buildings

  • Holding UNESCO Chair on Earthen Architecture 

  • Work to develop a mapping facility of UK and Irish earth buildings

Research & Development

To promote research and the development of understanding of earthen materials and their applications.

How we are working towards this aim:

  • CobBauge project – with the University of Plymouth

  • Developing Learning Outcomes and assessment methods for Earth Building qualifications with ECVET

  • Providing academic resources and a library of information on materials and techniques on our website

  • Links with Academic Institutions - Bath, Plymouth, York, and CAT.

  • Providing support for funding applications for research and development

New Build

To promote earth building in contemporary construction, through the development of innovative products and techniques. To work towards the development of appropriate standards and testing methods.


How we are working towards this aim:

  • Presence at Futurebuild (previously “Ecobuild”) - sharing CobBauge’s work

  • Lobbying the RIBA for a change in the national Architecture curriculum

  • Training for trainers, so Earth Building techniques can be taught to the industry.

Networking

To be recognised as a leading body, fostering links to other between organisations within the UK and beyond. To promote the development and dissemination of guidance on Earth Building. To foster networking between members.


How we are working towards this aim:

  • Annual Clayfest event, with expert speakers and workshops

  • Co-ordinating with a network of partners including Earth Build Europe and Earth Zimbabwe

  • A FaceBook page where enthusiasts and practitioners can share questions and knowledge

  • A monthly members only ‘Talking Shop’ evening on zoom for networking and discussions

Financial Transparency.

EBUKI is proud that the majority of the money that comes into the organisation is spent directly implementing earth building activities. (Even through the pandemic!)

During 2023-24 we invested in EBUKI’s future by developing this website to inspire and encourage even more earth building activities!

EBUKI is committed to advancing fair working conditions for everyone involved in the sector, including those involved in delivering training, research and other projects on behalf of EBUKI.

We support the Fair Work First criteria, including payment of the Real Living Wage.
