Heritage Open Days, Heritage Skills Centre, Lincoln Castle. 9th – 10th September 2017.

EMESS and EBUKI present Arch Building with Clay Blocks and Mud and Stud Workshops

The workshops will take place between 10 am and 4.30 pm on the 9th & 10th September 2017.

The workshops will involve volunteers from EMESS and will be open for the public to participate in.

It will take place within the confines of the Heritage Skills Centre courtyard.


The first workshop will consist of constructing 4 separate arches, built on formers, using earth blocks of approximately 450 x 225 x 100 mm in size. The arches will be
approximately 1.5m wide x 0.9m deep x 1.5m high. They will be built using a mud mortar mixed on site.

The second workshop will be to construct a lancet arch of earth blocks using a former. The arch will be approximately 2.5m wide x 0.9m deep and 2.5m high. It will be free
standing but will have a scaffold for support. It will be built using a mud mortar that will be mixed on site.

The third workshop will consist of mixing and applying a ‘mud and stud’ mix to ready assembled frames. The frames will be approximately 1m square.

All EMESS personnel have experience of working with earth.

The workshops will be run by suitably qualified/experienced staff.

H&S talk to be given prior to commencement on both days.

All participants will be given instruction prior to starting.
